Are single-use coffee and tea pods, such as those from Keurig and Tassimo, included in any recycling programs?
Single-use pods are included in a recycling program in BC through an organization called Multi-Material BC (MMBC). Through this program, many communities across the province are able to place these items into their curbside recycling, provided that the pods are emptied and rinsed out prior to recycling. The plastic or foil lids from these pods would not be included for recycling, and can be disposed of as garbage. For residents who cannot put these items into their recycling bins, there are also local depots that accept these pods free of charge. For local options and information, visit the Multi-Material BC website or call the RCBC Recycling Hotline.
For larger volumes of Tassimo brand disks, there is also a recycling option through a company called TerraCycle. TerraCycle will accept larger shipments of these pods free of charge for recycling. A pre-paid postage label can be downloaded from their website, and attached to the package for free shipping. This would be a great option for residents who use these pods frequently, or for offices that are looking to recycle their used pods in larger volumes. For more information on this program, visit the TerraCycle website.
