Are paperback and hardcover books included in my curbside recycling program?

Paperback and hardcover books are not included in the recycling program under Multi-Material BC as they are specifically excluded from Schedule 5 of the BC Recycling Regulation.  Many of the curbside recycling programs in BC no longer include paperback books.  If the books are in reusable condition, consider donating them to a local thrift store or having a garage sale.  There is also a charity called Discover Books that has drop off bins throughout the lower mainland, as well as in areas of the Fraser Valley and Vancouver Island.  Discover Books will also accept books that are too outdated or worn out to be reused for recycling.  To see if there is a bin located in your community, visit the Discover Books website.  Discover Books does not accept encyclopedias or magazines in their collection at this time.  They will recycle many books that cannot be reused, with the proceeds going towards local literacy programs.  If this program does not exist in your community, contact the RCBC Recycling Hotline for possible alternatives.
