Why can't I take my paint thinner to my local paint depot?

Warning message

Some recycling and solid waste facilities are temporarily closed, operating with reduced hours, or accepting a limited range of materials – please call ahead. Consider delaying your visit to facilities unless absolutely necessary by storing dry recyclables and other items at home temporarily.

Solvents like paint thinner are subject to different regulations than paint. They are more dangerous than most paints and require different storage and handling facilities. While regular "Paint Only" depots will not accept solvents, there are more than 50 "Household Hazardous Waste" depots for the free drop-off of flammable liquids, pesticides, and gasoline throughout the province operated by Product Care Recycling.

Visit the Product Care website for a full description of acceptable products. Call the RCBC Recycling Hotline or search the RCBC Recyclepedia for the depot nearest you, as well as more information on acceptable products.
